The Red Reindeer and the Yellow Zebra

So we went geocaching today with Dr. C3GPS, Sam and me. After trekking through the woods and walking up a huge hill, we found what we were looking for. However, we had to walk back. Since the trek included a large downhill trek through the woods, we had to make that one back uphill also. We were all a bit tired. I had on a red coat as did momma. Sam had on a yellow coat. I was the red reindeer, Sam was the yellow zebra and momma was the red bird (apparently there is something wrong with just being a human).

Anyway, the conversation went something like this:

Zebra: The red reindeer is in front and the yellow zebra is next and the red bird is last.
(a bit of time goes by)
Zebra: The yellow zebra is getting tired. Hey reindeer, can you carry the yellow zebra?
Reindeer: No, the reindeer is having a hard enough time carrying himself.
Zebra: But I can’t go anymore!
Reindeer: Yes you can.
Zebra: No I can’t.

This conversation went on pretty much all the way back to the car.

She wants to grow up!

Sam was brushing her teeth this morning and was getting a drink to rinse her mouth.

Sam: I hate this countertop.
Me: Why?
Sam: It hurts my belly when I turn on the water.
Me: Well, you’re just going to have to grow taller. Momma and I don’t want you to grow up though. We want you to stay 5.
Sam: No! I want to grow up. If I stay 5 I won’t ever get out of school and I hate school!

Sam says funny things all the time.

A few days ago when we had 8 inches of snow on the ground, Sam and I went out to shovel/play in it.  While I was shovelling, she was playing and found a large chunk of ice which she proceeded to put on the grill.  Mind you, the grill also had 8 inches of snow on it.  After I was done with the driveway, I cleaned off some other things, including the grill.  She saw that I had cleaned it of and threw a mini fit that I had destroyed her “sculpture”.

All day I heard about that sculpture as did her mother who was informed of my infraction immediately upon returning home from work.   At bedtime she said she was still upset about it but we told her to forget it and go to sleep.  About an hour later I heard her crying in her room.  When I went to see what was wrong I was told that I hurt her feelings when I destroyed the sculpture.  I told her that we could make a new one the next day after school and she agreed that this was an acceptable resolution.

The next day after we got home from school we came in the house and put her things away.  I told her that I was ready to go out and make the new sculpture, to which she replied “Nah.  I think I can live without it”.  She’s never brought it up since then.
